Here goes,
sorry for the essay
ive got a 1998 escort gti it wasnt idling properly when first started it was hunting then when I was stopping a traffic lights the revs were dropping to arround 500 rpm it was drinking like anything doing about 18 mpg,
so I did a bit of research and thought id clean out the idle controll valve so I did that today and while I was doing that cleaned the throttle body as it had all black build up in it and was a bit corroded, oh also the inlet manifolf had a big puddle of petrol in it.
so I got it all back together and now the car starts up at about 2000 rpm on all four then the revs drop to nearly dying point then chugs on two cylinders and but if I put the revs up myself it goes up fine but then gradualy goes down and misfires like anything.
all hoses pipes and wires are all on properly aswell,
please help me sombody, thanks in advance neil.

With a puddle of petrol in the inlet manifold, the car is massively over fueling.
Can be defective injector or wiring, which causes it to be open all the time.
Or a leak in the exhaust leading to false readings from the Oxygen sensor, or a defective oxygen sensor. I have seen a fuel pressure regulator that was blocked and that lead to a fuel pressure more than 2 times what is normal.
Take it to a professional before you kill the engine.
After repairs are finished change the oil and oil filter. There's probably a lot of petrol in it.

Have you tried resetting the ecu? If its used to running on certain readings but getting total different ones now then fueling etc will be all over the place

On the focus's you unplug battery for 30mins (radio code may be needed if factory radio), then start it up and let it idle for 10mins with lights, heated window, blowers on and every so often rev the engine- gentle at first then more vigorous and then finally go for a bit of a drive. But as I'm used to focus, I'd wait if someone escort orientated comments if this works or not first.

Like said try resetting ecu, mine did the same, so unpluged batteryed for a couple of hours, i heard it only needs 10mins but i did a few hours to be sure, then started it up and let it idle, ran spot on afterwards!
P.s i put a new idle valve on....but tried cleaning trick 1st but didnt reset ecu, so could of saved meself 50squid!
