Essex v6 starting problems

Essex v6 starting problems
Hi,
The engine is a 1975 essex v6, it fired up a month ago and since I've fitted new exhaust manifolds and powder coated a few bitss, haven't touched the engine aside from fitting new plugs and leads, I didn't mark the firing order but I've loked at two other essex v6 (later types) and copied there firing order.
The engine has fuel, spark and air.
Its done 10,000 miles, when I tried firing it up it tries to start but never does, I also tried jump starting it by twoing it with another car and in 2nd gear when I release the clutch the rear wheels lock up (rear wheel drive) and nothing happens.
Any idea's? I'm thinking the plugs may be on in the wrong order but I can't find anything out until monday when I try phoning graham walker spares.
cheers,
steven

Take the no 1 spark plug out and turn the engine over until the piston is at TDC (or very close) - the rotor arm should then be pointing to the HT lead connected to plug no 1 - or be 180degrees out - 50/50 chance (saves taking the rocker cover off).
Clockwise from this position, the leads should be 1-4-2-5-3-6, with no1 at the front of the driver's side bank, and no3 at the front of the passenger's side bank.
Don't make the mistake of connecting your HT leads in the same position as on someone else's engine - their dizzy may have been put in in a different orientation to yours (the LT wiring plug on the side may be in a different position).

Hi,
Another quick question
"Clockwise from this position, the leads should be 1-4-2-5-3-6, with no1 at the front of the driver's side bank, and no3 at the front of the passenger's side bank. "
If the following was the layout of the pots as suggested..
Driverside 0 0
0 0
1- 0 0 -3
How does the cylinder numbering work?
confused,
steven

If you are standing by the slam pannel looking towards the windscreen the
cylinders on your left hand side are 1,2,3, and the ones on the right hand side are 4,5,6, ,and the firing order is 1,4,2,5,3,6.

Evening fella's,
Right, I looked at it this afternoon and I have the ignition leads were totallys back to front so swapped everything round, its sounds much cleaner trying to start but still doesn't, If I leave the carb shut i.e. just turn the ignition key with know throttle it spits out fuel vapur and the odd spark now and again
I think its flooded with fuel so after I stick two new engine mounts on it tommorow night and checked everything over again we are going to try and push start it by towing it.
Any thoughts?
cheers,
steven
