Default Tuning - Where To Start

Hi guys, my mum's just bought a little fiesta fusion 2 1.6 petrol (03plate) and wants to find out about a remap mainly for economy reasons.

I've had a quick look around and prices seem to be about £250 for what I gather is just a generic flash.

So I'm thinking how much would a cable and software cost for me to do it myself (I am experienced with custom remaps and have wideband equipment, det cans if needed).

If I can get the software/cable for a similar price to a remap then I may as well buy the equipment and do it myself.

Whats your thoughts guys?

Remap is not going to do a lot. Neither in terms of power and torque, nor in fuel economy.
The car is EOBD compliant so it has a lot of checks incorporated. That means you still have to run a closed loop lambda in partial load, so in that area (used 90% of the driving time), you are not going to improve much.

as said, not much to be had in terms of anything (power or economy) from the 1.6 petrol.

best thing you can do is use a good quality oil and do regular services.

oh and especially for improved economy check the tyre pressures weekly, makes a HUGE difference to economy and the way the car drives not to mention the HUGE saftey implications.

ok, cheers for the reply lads.

Thought there would be a way to disable closed loop.

....is there not much to be gained by advancing ignition in the cruise areas?

If you have the possibility, read live data during a test drive.
And be amazed how much ignition advance is used by the standard software.

Ford (and every other manufacturer) has to publish fuel economy statistics. So, the standard mapping is already pretty good to perfect. Otherwise the fuel economy will be not so good, and that will be a reason for the general public to buy another make.

Of course, anything can be changed in software. Even the closed loop can be disabled, but that would be a problem with the next MOT-test.
