Sierras use 2 feeds to their indicator/hazard stalk - one permanent (for hazards) and one switched through the ignition (for indicators). If escorts are similar, which they probably are, have a look for a blown/dodgy/missing fuse in the fuse box.

What he ^^ said also check reversing lights as if as said they are like the Sierra the two are on the same circuit so these would not work either.

I have changed relay on the stalk and there are no blown fuses either, The Hazards switch seems a bit dodgy as u have to fiddle with it to get them to kick in? Do the mk4 suffer with fuse box issues like mk5?? cheers

I had this problem with my Sierra a little while back... Changed the indicator relais and checked fuses. Still nothing. Then decided to change the indicator stalk and whey presto, no problems anymore. Just wish I'd done this before forking out for a new relais

All the best, Nige

just had this problem at the weekend with my sierra , was acting up exactly as described - it turned out to be the hazard switch being faulty

It's nearly always the hazzard switch, the reason for this is the lack of exercise the switches get, ie never get used, the beeswax that they were filled with from new goes hard, jams the switches mechanically and also stops current flow across the pin terminals inside, a easy if fiddly fix, take apart spray out clean with wd40 etc drench it well, dry out with air etc, then either put in beeswax on the switches and locking mech for the up/down action or use lots of furniture polish that contains silicone(make sure it does some don't).
