You're not the first with this problem, the system uses a "fuel" relay, or to give it it's proper name a timer, this is used only to prime the system prior to starting, when the pump runs continuously, the excess pressure being diverted back to the tank.
The cure ?, rewire the pump through a std relay from position 2 ignition, but through a fuel cut out switch, such as found on efi cars mondeo etc etc for safety.
Net result 100% end of problems and in safety, why people don't do it I don't know the pumps are not bothered a bout a prime, they will do this in a sec or so when turned to pos 2 anyway, total cost should be about 1 hours work and £3 for a relay!!

First thing is any relay can be used, ie a boggo std yellow relay as found under all ford bonnets.
This will have numbers 30, 85, 86, 87 marked on it.
Connect as follows,
30 supply from a permanent live/battery through fuse.
85 earth, only needs a very thin wire
86 live from position 2 of ignition, again only needs a thin wire
87 is output(live) to pump live terminal.
So terminals 30 and 87 become connected once the ignition is turned on, so need to be heavy enough to handle around 10 amps, 32/020 thinwall is ideal, or 28/030, somewhere along the 87 wire you need to insert a mondeo type fuel cut out, solidly mounted to the bodywork, as these need the "shock" of an accident to trip them into cutting the supply, job done.
