leaded vs unleaded
hello all
i need some help with my 1600 x-flow engine i recently brought a kit car that is basically a mk2 escort underneath. it has come the time to fire the engine up but the question is has the engine been converted to unleaded if so how could i tell, is this even possable with out removing the valves. and also if removing the valves is the only what damage would be done if any bye useing unleaded with lead replacement.
any help would be great.

i dont think youd damage it by using unleaded with lead replacement.
i know on landrovers the exhaust valves are changed to run unleaded so maybe a subtle difference there
could you not ask the person you got the engine from?

The valves arn't the problem it's the seats which if not hardened can lead to VSR (Valve seat recession) only way I can think to tell is to remove the head then see if there are hardened seats, TBH the unleaded thing is a bit over hyped as the engine has been run for many years on leaded this leaves a "Lead Coating" on the valves etc. If driving hard or towing etc, lots of motorway driving then you could well burn a seat out but under normal conditions it shouldn't have any impact.
You can use Lead additive if at all worried.

Depends entirely on use, if not ragging the arse of it all the time, will be fine, seats are hard naturally as a iron head, but exhaust seats need changing for 100% confidence, easy enough job for machine shop.
Or you could hook up a autoflash 2000 lubricator, this is a 1L bottle of stuff that will last at least 2000 miles, meant for LPG cars running without dry fuel seats, but protects far batter than lead additives do, it is simply sucked into the inlet via the small pipe on top of the bottle so fit and forget, just need a little setting up with measuring doses etc.
It's certainly easier than getting some one to fit dry fuel inserts, a seriously hard material that eats cutters!!
