Default 2WD Cossie, vague steering?

Having a problem with the Saff lately, the steering has a horrible vague spot either side of centre, seems to be OK when loaded up with a bit of lock on. If I'm driving in a straight line it seems to need a lot of correction constantly.

I've changed the TCA's (poly bushed all round) and found the ball joints knackered, so i'm thinking the track rod ends may be the same. Failing that I suspect the steering column joint, but that would make the steering the same all the time surely?

The rack was replaced a few years ago and hasn't done many miles since so I'm hoping that is still OK.

Any thoughts welcome.

Grab the steering shaft as it goes through the bulkhead into the engine bay, and see if there is lots of play, may just be the usual problem of the plastic bush bits worn away, about Ł3.50 for a new set, easy to do about 20-30 mins.
Also inspect the flexi joint on the drop ink bit from the end of the steering column shaft to the rack itself, concept-racing do these at Ł35 delivered, very good quality they are, do coloured ones too.
