Default speedo drive pinion

hi guys, got a bit of a question
the speedo drive pinion on my frst needs replacing.
a friend of my dad's fancies himself as a bit of a cvh expert and recons that if the speedo pinion needs replacing the dif bearings will also be warn so repacing the pinion will only fix it temorarily.
is this correct?

Most likely, when the diff bearings wear the movement wears the speedo drive pinion, they don't normally wear as no great load on them just a cable.
Only way to see is to try a new one.

You can take the speedo drive pinion out and see if the shape is like )( instead of ||. So, if it's worn in the middle, the diff bearings are on their last legs.
