It can be a number of things from dodgy wiring, to faulty ABS sensor, to faulty ABS ECU, pump, any combination of the above, you name it...

A lot of people have ABS problems with their old sierras, common problem. Best get a brake specialist to check out the system for you, they should be able to give you an idea of what is wrong.

If the current owner will let you do this, you may then be able to get the price down depending on results.

Not sure if/how you can turn the ABS off altogether.

Good luck and welcome on board.

you can easily trun off the abs altogether by installing a switch in the power to the abs ecu. this may mean that the pump does not then work, and the pump is what boosts the front brakes (otherwise the pedal is damned hard to press) and completely operates the rear brakes (there is no master cylinder for rear brakes).

also, to pass an mot, the abs light must function correctly. i.e. come on when ignition onto 2, and go off a few seconds later. a sensor fault will normally light the light when you start moving.

you could take it off altoghther, but you would have to take the entire system off and replace it with xr4x4 non abs system but as they are like rocking horse poo you would have to buy all new servo, master cylinders, etc so it would be cheaper in the long run to get the abs sorted,

foreigneRS i still haven't got mine sorted yet

me either. but i haven't devoted any time to it, so can't expect it to fix itself. my next plan is to clean up the earth points on the sensor mounts.

I had the same problem on my 2wd saph. Mate of a mate is a ford mechanic and gave me the test procedure. After checking the values stated i sussed it down to a faulty sensor which i duely got from a scrapped scorpio at a local breakers for pennies.
If you remove the plug from the ecu (you'll have to undo the securing screws of the ecu first) meter between the the 8 pins off to left-one probe in the top row, one probe in the corresponding lower row. you should see a resistance of between 900 and 1400 ohms.
This may show the fault up as a sensor. if they're all ok, there is another test you can do.
I'll try to find the paper work showing the pin numbers and axle position, as the numbers are on the plug if you remove the cover to expose the wires.
Hope this helps out
