Default 1998 Escort van fuel problem

Hi All, I have a 1998 escort van 55 which has a fuel problem. While out driving the other day it started to splutter and would not go past 40mph, I hade to keep changing gears to keep going. Then on my return it stoped running, after 5 min or so I got it going 1 mile later stoped again, I could'nt restart as I run the battery flat.

I checked the fuel filter and it seems in good nic, very clean, seals look good. Altough when I took the filter of I seen some ice in the bottom of the filter, not alot of ice but still ice.

Anyone know whats happening here and is ice normal in the filter (i dont think so, but i have to ask to be sure)

Any help would be great

Thanks in advanced

Lowa

From your description I assume it's a diesel ?
If so yes the water is normal, ther eis a drain screw underneath for draining the water off every 2-3 months, just undo let a little diesel run out taking the water with it, then tighten back up, this will cure your problem.
