Default mk4 escort xr3i efi cab running issues

Hi guys
Im after some help, ive recently bought a h reg mk4 escort xr3i cabriolet, on the way home on the m1 it lost power chucked a some smoke out then what looked like hot embers out the exhaust and cut out i got it restarted and it cut out again within a min or two, i got it recovered home went to start it the following day it struggled to start but did start and ran for about a min and cut out, ive since changed the cambelt as it looked like it had seen better days and also checked it was getting spark and fuel which it was but it still would start easily eventually it started up and ran fine for about 5 mins and then cut out and wont restart. any ideas what it could be ? as its doing my head in now
cheers for any info on getting it sorted.

That was my first thought the exhaust collasping but I forgot to say i had unbolted the system from the down pipe and it did run but stalled then i reconected the exhaust and started and ran for about 5 mins fine but then stalled again, so know the exhaust isnt completely blocked but could a partially blocked exhaust cause problems ? the car has only done a few thousand miles in the last couple of years

DONT think the car will run for long with down pipe disconnected m8 and I'd say sounds like exhaust is your problem! connect the down pipe up and take off the back box and see what happens!

i left the down pipe on and seperated at the first joint just past the engine looking from the top, but it ran for 5 mins with the exhaust bolted back together
