sounds like you let it run low on oil and probably worn a big end bearing out.
Piston slap is common to the 2wds, and it happens when the engine is started from cold, Once warmed the slap goes.

This has been on my mind also. While cleaning and painting my ZVH block i wiggled the piston at BDC and they moved side to side about 1-2mm and at TDC moved around 1mm side to side. It was a bloody cold day and im guessing that thermal expansion and some oil (oil was drained) would close the gap?
Just got me worried too.

as said, sounds like big end bearing shagged, strip and sort.
piston slap is only there when cold till oil thins and piston expands a little. to tighten up the gap to the bores.
dan track ka: 1-2mm is quite a lot fellam i'd suggest getting an engineer to look at it, as it sounds like the bores a bit too worn, so either new oversized pistons or a fresh low mileage block with standard sized bores.
