Default Sensor on gearbox

Hi i have a 98 escort gti, i presume this is the MTX75 gearbox does anyone know what the black plastic sensor is that screws into the gearbox, has three wires going into it and the speedo cable, i presume this is a speed sensor, does anyone know if it is linked to management and could it effect performance if damaged? cheer's in advance, jeff.

it will be the speed sensor mate - it could very well affect how it runs - best bet would be to get it to a deale who can plug into the ecu and monitor what speed the ecu is seeing.
