how do i turn the diesel pump up on my escort van???

Got a problem with my diesel pump, in a nut shell it needs replacing, however the pump on there already hasn't got any sensors, whereas the pump I got hold of has a sensor on the top of it??? It attaches to the throttle cables linkages, but if I fit it will it work???
