Default Help! Sheared off locking nut key!

Ive just got in from replacing the discs on the front of my ST170 Focus and have sheared the locking nut key off. But . . . its sitting on non standard wheels which have wheel specific nuts which is where the problem lies!

Its fitted with 17 BSA Bullet wheels but the nuts are internal drive rather than the usual external drive type fitted to most other wheels, I have about 5mm exposed from the wheels so have to use that to try to remove the nut. Does anyone have any useful suggestions to help me get this bloody nut off without wrecking anything?

Cheers,
Paul

Weld a old bit of bar/socket on there, protect wheel with a thin bit of metal rolled up around the nut.

forget welding it can make a mess of the wheel, just get a socket just a bit smaller than the bolt head and whack it on with a hammer, then using a cross bar wheel brace, it should come off.

+1 make you wonder tho, are locking bolts worth it?

+2, or you can do as i did and carefully tap it round with a center punch.I have done this on a range of locking nut's. I have removed mine as they become more trouble than there worth.

When trying the centre punch one. Tighten all the other nut up as much as you can will make the locking wheel nut looser.

drill the nut in the centre and counter-tap the hole. mite not work depending on tightness but worth a try. also do what the other lad said and tighten the others as far as possible (not too far though, or you may damage the wheel).

them wheel nuts are a night mare, if there what i think they are you can't bang a smaller socket over them all i can say is good luck

Are they like this sort of thing, I've seen some with smaller side walls to the nuts so they just open out.

Cant do that mate, as said in the original post these nuts are internal drive, you put an adapter inside the nut to turn them rather than put a socket over them!

In my defense they were on the car already, i'll most likely replace them with non locking variants like the other nuts.

Again, doubt this would work as mine are internal drive, you'd need a massivley long drillbit to reach the metal through the hole!!!

I'll run it round to RTec in the morning and see if they can source replacment nuts before I attempt getting these off - its looking like i'll get something welded to what material I have left and get them out that way. Thanks for the replies though everyone!!!!

Drill the head off is a pain to do but ultimately will work.

Try beating a socket over it first though, might be able to get it to bite.

When people say "violence isnt the answer" with locking wheelnuts it often is!

These are very similar to what I have, except that my locking one has a different shaped head. (Well, the problem one looks slightly different as it has half an adapter stuck inside it!!)

They fit inside the wheel holes and sit more or less flush wih the outer face of the wheel.

Same applies mate, you just use an external hex socket instead of an internal one, still same principle though, just beat something in that nearly fits.

so thee is absolutely no room between the hole in the rim and the nut?
if that s the case then get some cutting fluid and some drill bits, drill out the sheared key and whack a torx bit in there, make sure it's a 1/2" drive one as lesser ones may break.
