Default Cannot Remove 5th Gear with Puller

I've been trying to remove 5th gear from my gearbox (Mk6 Fiesta IB5) for the last day with no luck. When I start to tighten the gear puller it slips off. Can anyone at all help???

I think the gear puller is supposed to go behind the actual gear but there isn't enough room so I'm putting the lugs on the front of the gear where the is a small ring/ledge.

Please help

Cheers
Ste

This is the gear puller I bought:

use two legs and put a g-clamp across the legs to stop it slipping or get the proper clamp

Use some/lots of heat as well, always helps, the correct puller would do the job no problem.

It's quite easy to pull the gear to pieces with an incorrect puller.

Hint:
Put your partly stripped gearbox to the trunk. Drive to your nearest Ford workshop. Ask/bribe to get the tool for a five minutes loan.

Ive always done mine with a hydraulic press at a mates workshop. Trying to use a mickey-mouse puller will end in tears imho. When you go to put the gear back in, stick it in the oven to heat it up and it will slip straight on the spline.

The proper Ford tool is not too expensive either. I think I paid around 20£ for mine.

Thanks for the help guys.I eventually found a local gearbox rebuilder who let me borrow the proper gear puller.

Now I'm struggling to put 5th gear back on. Anyone know what Gas Mark and for how long it needs to stay in the oven for?????

Cheers

I cannot find the specific tool I used, but you need something like this:
