What oil for a xr3i? (1.6 8v)
What oil would you guys recommend?
I been running 5/30 and it went smooth, but it started smoking for some odd reason (new top head and stuff, so that aint the reason) each time it stood for more than 30 minutes it would produce a big ass cloud out of the exhaust in the first 1nd and then almost not smoke afterwards.
Anyway, i changed back to 10/40 and drove a little ride aprox 40 kilometers, and hit the rev max sometimes and it stopped.
But i think it ticks like hell with the 10/40? im going to use it (the car) to my school (8 kilometers) each way and i dont like the oil not even getting warm day in and day out.
Should i just try and drive some more with the 10/40 or bite the apple and change back to 5/30?
My mechanic said to go for the 10/40 but i have a feeling the 5w30 was better.
Obs: What about full syntec? I never used it before since ibeen recommended to stay away from it.

fully synthetic is fine and has alot of benefits, who told you to run 5w30 in it?!
Will try and check the manual but i have always run 10w40 too as 5w is a bit too thin really.
I put some in the gfs xr3i when it was mfi by mistake a while back and it actually killed 2 cams before i realised it was the wrong oil in it!!

you could always use slight oil thickner with the 10w40 to stop the tappets noise,a ford engine is always tappety especially on the 1.8,i used about half a litre of 20w50 to thicken it up and it was alright then

5w40 sounds nice but my mechanic told me to stay away from full syntethic,
And i need to use THICKER oil to make it stop tikking? the valve and lifters + cam is all brand new and i always been told to use thin oil on the cvh engine!?
Btw you put some gfs in, what is that mate?

put some oil in my gfs (girlfriends!!) xr3i.
I think its ok on newer engines as a motor factor said to use either 5w 30 or 10w 40 but when i stuck the thinner oil in it killed 2 camshafts!!! and wore 2 of the tappets out. But when it was on 10w 40 it was fine so.
