Default st170 vvt question

i have just put an st motor in my focus and we are now on with mapping it and we dont know which pin to power to get the vvt to come in, at the moment our understanding is that with no power to it the pulley sits in the middle and when powerd up it advances the cam timing.

firstly is this right?

secondly i have read a post in another forum that says when there is no power the pulley is in the middle but depending on the ammount of power or which pin it you power it can advance or retard the timing of the cam

is this right or wrong?

You usually PWM the solenoid to control cam angle.
