XR2I Starting prob
Hello all,
wondered if anyone could help, i have a XR2I 1990, if i start the engine when cold like first thing in the morning, its ok but if i turn off even after about 5mins of driving it wont start again, just slowly tries to turn over like the battery is flat, but the battery is charging, put a new one on yesterday aswell, the alternator & starter motor are less than year old, if i jump start the car though i starts but makes a awful noise like has no oil but has!
Any ideas :-(

I would check all leads are tight on battery and engine.
It sounds as though your starter is the trouble, the turning over slowly shows that is is engaged, pretty sure they are pre engaged on these, but the grauchy noise could be it not engaging correctly and chewing on the ring gear.
Either way it needs to come off, and make sure it throws ok, when energised.
If it is a BOSCH starter, it will most likely be the solenoid at fault, as the varnish/laquer comes off the solenoid piston and jams it in the housing so it doesn't reach full travel.
To fix just use some knackerd emery cloth about 800-1000 grade with oil clean inside of the solenoid housingh and the outside of the piston assembly that moves.
As to why it would turn over slow, I would have a good look at the brushes, see if they are worn or the starter is oil logged, if needed undercut slightly with a scraper.

Some one said about the starter but that it gets hot as right next to the downpipes, this would explain why it starts when cold not hot, its i had a prob with the solenoid on my last starter motor but got it exchanged, its been doing it on and off for few months but now its all the time
I spend hour after work taking the starter motor off and cleaning, noticed the wires going to it have the insulation burn by the manifold so taped up for now, drove around for about 15mins then back home to my drive, then tried to restart and nothing again :-(
