Default Steering Spline Question

Hi all,

I have a locost kit car and i'm looking to fit my aftermarket sparco wheel.

The local ford dealer advised me that my steering column / 6 sided hex was off an MK3 Escort (82 - 86).

With this info i went to a local motorsport shop.

They ordered me a Mountney KK32X Boss, i've gone to try and trial fit it but it doesnt slide all the way on like my old wheel / boss and has lots of free play. I'm not sure if i need to put the nut on and just tighten it so it pulls it on or not.

After some research about the boss i came up with the following:

KK32X: Mountney Steering Wheel Adapter Kit, Ford Sierra (inc XR4 & RS Cosworth), 82>95

There is no mention here of an MK3 escort so i'm wondering if the sierra 82>95 steering column is the same as an MK3 escort?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Confused Chris

I've tried it with and without the indicator ring.

I just can't find any info anywhere that will tell me if an MK3 steering column at the top is the same hex as that of a sierra

it should fit the same - I've got a mk3/4 Escort boss on my Sierra column and it fits fine

you tried to fit the boss with the key in the ignition, position 1, to remove the steering wheel lock, of course

also, the standard column has a spring at the bottom which may have caused the inner column to retract slightly, so, yes, it would be better to try the boss with the top nut tightened

The spring and the bush at the bottom of the column would have been my bet too. Carefully position the bush back into the column tube, it will only go in correctly one way. If you just tighten the nut with the bush out of place, you will split it easily.

Think i've found the problem.

The inside of the boss they got me starts getting smaller (gets thinner one end) straight away where as on my old boss it's a normal hex for the first bit of the boss then its just a normal tube to go around the threaded part.

This means the new boss doesnt even try to go on!

Starting to get annoyed with it now. Asked for an MK3 escort boss, took 5 weeks or so for this one to reach me and it doesnt fit! I think im going to end up trying to drill holes and modify the original boss

Can anyone look at the pic i've posted and confirm it looks like their steering column or a steering column thats deffo off a ford escort/sierra etc.

Did a search for my old boss. A guy was selling the exact same boss and wheel but it was off his classic mini!

What the heck is going on lol
