it's only a bitch in so far as you must remove the whole dash to get the heater box out.

why do you have to change it? cos it leaks?

if it doesn't leak, but doesn't give you hot air, there are a few reasons.

1) the cable is no longer moving the air divert flap to send the air thru the heater core - check that there is a change in sound of the air flow on max. blower setting and you should hear the flap come to a stop.

2) airlock in the coolant system stopping coolant flowing thru the core - are the 2 pipes going to the heater hot?

3) heater core blocked with shitty water/freezeaunty - remove both hoses and try to flush thru backwards (opposite flow direction to normal - ie. put hose pipe on the outlet of the heater that normally goes from the head to the heater). if it doesn't flow much and is all dirty, connect a length of hose pipe and pour some mr muscle drain cleaner in there and leave for a few hours. flush it out and repeat as necessary.

foreigneRS;

Ive looked in the Ford manual, it implies that you only need to get the lower dash out?!
The reason i need to change it is, when i took the little hose off to get the engine out, the plastic pipe came off too...
Tried to bodge it with a new piece of metal tube and loads of JB Weld, but its still pissing out...

RS500/104;

Getting a bit of water on the carpet is the least of my worries!!

Thanks for your help guys!!

you may only need to take the lower dash out. i've only ever removed my complete heater box when i've had the whole dash out for other reasons.

having the entre dash out sn't the biggest deal anyway. just take off the steering wheel cowls, take out display to disconnect it, take off the bottom parts and the top part is held in with 3 screws along the top and one on each side at the bottom. just a few switches and stuff to disconnect, but put a cable tie that you can write on with a permanent marker on each one and it goes back together easily.

Did exactly the same on my old 4x4
Snapped when fitting samco coolant kit

Just lower half of dash to take out,not to bad just take your time and don't break any clips/covers etc so it goes back as per original

Just have to unbolt heater box(2 13mm nuts onto bulkhead)and slide it around enough so that heater matrix will slide out past clutch pedal.

Cheers for your help guys!!!

Did it today, not that bad in the end...
Bit fiddly, getting the matrix past the pedals. Blew all the water out the matrix first, only got a teaspoon size drip in the car...

Yea lower dash only mate, theres a lesson in there as well, dont use samco tubing on the heater matrix outlet pipes, they are only pastic and easy to split when tightening. The standard ford pipe is softer, and use the ford very narrow jubilee clips, cos they dig into the pipe and seal well. Dont use a normal jubilee clip as u will crack the pipe. The previous owner of my saph had fitted samcos, overtightened to the extent one of the plastic pipes had split, and had to bypass the matrix, which is all you can do to keep your car running. I wanted a heater for winter, so i got new matrix out of an xr4i out of scrappie for bout 5 squids.
