Left/Right Play in Steering Column
As title, in my mk4 esy.
Any ideas?
No wobble under braking or bumpy roads just noticeable play when turning either left or right.
You can turn the wheel a degree either direction then 'clonk' then it starts actually turning the wheels. Its almost as if one of the CV joints in the column is worn.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing its not column bushes as the column doesnt move itself if I try to wobble it.
I cant see any obvious wear or feel any play in any front joints.
I do have a spare rack if necessary but its for a mk3 if it makes any odds.

OK cheers.
My thought was also to replace the rack just to eliminate it from my list of possibles.
Just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas.
Its always the little stupid things that are the most annoying.

just check the thread pitch on the mk3 one matches to the track rod ends that you have as i think the mk3 one had a slightly coarser thread than the mk4 one.
