Hello all,
I was hopeing that maybe somebody remembers how an old Cosworth emulator works.
I bought the machine a few years back off eBay but the unit had no instructions and did'nt turn on so i got my money refunded.
I eventually got the thing going by connecting it direct to my car's batt.but the machine read on it's dot matrix display the words 'ecu down'.
The model is made by cosworth and it's serial number is DS-86,made in june '92 and has an RS232 lead for an external printer and a lead to connect to the sierra/escort cosworth's dianostics 3 wire port.
The internal back-up batt. has long since died and doesn't hold any charge off a generic 12v charger.
Any info. will be much appriciated so i can possibly alter my Vw corrado T.16V's equipped with Pectal super 8 inj. system myself as i'm based in Rome,Italy and most of the chimps over here can't map or alter anything because the cars got a Lancia delta evo-1 loom...
Thanks.

I hate to disappoint you, but this is definitely not an emulator.
An emulator replaces a chip, so a eprom-emulator would have a rectangular connector with 28 or 32 pins.
As it's connected to the diagnostic port, my guess is that it's some sort of datalogger.
Can you post some pictures of the device?

As far as i am aware, pectel super 8 cannot be live mapped with an emulator

Thanks guys,
Here's the strange thing, this machine does have the 28pin slot you pop the chip into(i've got a spare 3dr 365bhp cosworth chip sitting in it's slot).
I'll try and explain a little more in detail, right under were the chip sits is the word 'expansion',on the right are 16 grey keys, similuer to the old Commodore 64 computer key board's keys. Here's what the keys have printed above them:1st key(0) Mode 1. 2nd:Mode 2. 3rd:Corr. 4:read. 5:write 6:c.inj. 7:c.phase. 8:c.adv. 9:enter. 10:down.The remaining keys have abcdef printed on them,A has UP printed on,B has FCM.C has PRINT,D has the word SHIFT. E has E with a small '2' then PROM(EPROM squared??) and finally F has EXIT.
The display looks quite modern compared to the machine's manufacture date of mid '92,possibly a dot matrix screen?.
Inside the unit is a back-up battery that has long since demised but i did manage to get the bloody thing working and to be greeted by a message stating 'Ecu down'.
There were no instructions with the reader, that's how i got refunded by the guy who sold me it off eBay,he sells an awfull lot of Cosworth gear on eBay,i wonder if he is a member of Passion ford?...
Unfortunatly i can't send photos because my cameras been nicked.
Strangely i also asked a very knowlegable and great person who is Mr Alastair maine of GGR fame(My Corrado's 8inj iaw/Weber Pectal hardware was mapped by GGR) and he said the same thing,he'd never heard of such a device!.
Lastly, the reader came in a high quality black case that has COSWORTH inbossed on to it's front in green lettering and judging by the look of the print it looks100% genuine stuff...
Thanks again if anyone remebers anything.

It might be a combined emulator/programmer. But if we just assume it's an emulator for now then I am afraid it might be useless without the correct software to run on a pc. To emulate I would expect that you would need to use a ribbon cable to connect the DIL slot on the emulator with the EPROM slot in the ecu. The PC would normally allow uploading of the code/data to the emulator and possibly 'on the fly changes'. The hexadecimal key pad would almost definitely allow changes to be made real time to tweak the fuel and spark etc. A photograph would be good to see.
