st170 noisy engine!
have been reading throu the threads, i own an 02 plate st170 and the engine sounds really tappetty some people say its sticky valves others say its ecu/sensor problems. has anyone had a really noisy - tick tick tick tick ticking that just dosent go away, at the moment the car sounds like its a 1992 battered old fiesta that needs scrapping.
the noisy becomes quite apparent when engine warms to normal operating tempreture and isnt so bad when its cold but its still there.
p.s its not long had an oil change and that doesnt solve the problem.

what oil do you use; are you mechanically minded?
you should be able to tell the difference between injectors pulsing and tappets; injectors are electrical and tappets are mechanical
post up a video using www.photobucket.com it might help mate

first of all, its got 80000 on the clock so it quite high milage. its not an injector type noise yes there noisy but not more than any other st170, its definitely a ticking noise that increases with the rpm, will have to wait til the weekend and i'll post a video up. if it is the tappets how much does it cost to replace them anyone got any ideas? is it a job i can do myself or would it be best getting someone to do it.
the oil i used was part synthetic 5w30, i've also tried that Jayes hydralic lifter and its had no effect. was going to try an engine flush at the weekend and do the oil again.
any help greatly appreciated,

The ST170 does NOT have tappets, it has solid lifters so it is generally a bit louder than an engine that has hydraulic lifters. When the lifter buckets wear additional noise will be heard as the lifter buckets will need re shimming. But 80'000 is not enough milage to require this really. Remover the cover over the coil and try and peer down to the inlet manifold, you will see a cable running to it attached to a lever. Get some one to turn on the engine you should see the cable move as soon as the igniton or engine starts, if this does not happen the IMRC is fookbar and needs replacing, or the lever is broken on the inlet manfold. A broken lever does not tap tap tap but a mashed up IMRC box does as its the gears inside you can hear.
IMRC is about £180 for the part alone.
