Hi everyone hows it going?
Does anyone know if there is a power steering conversion available for a mk4 escort cabriolet at all?
My girlfriend is finding it a bit tough on her arms at the minute as the car has a cosworth steering wheel and is running 205 tyres too so any help would be greatfully received.

That's the reason its heavy - the offset of those wheels is totally wrong for a Mk4 Escort. A friend had Sierra wheels on a Mk4 escort, and when we replaced them with wheels with the correct offset the steering was much lighter.
think you are wrong the bloke who lives next door to me has a mk3 escort 4door 1.4cvh with a power stearing conversion? from some company i can see it being that much different to fit it to a mk4 escort? ill ask him if i can take some picks

No honestly, I'm always interested in new pictures.
The 1.4 wasn't introduced til 86 when the mk4's came out!! Mk3's had either the obselete 1.3 CVH, or 1.6 CVH.
you mean a Mk5/6
(Mk3 pictured in my siggy for reference)

As SafeChav says no Mk3/Mk4 Escort left the factory with power steering. Some Motorbility cars had conversion kits fitted but that was it. Mk4s were available on the continent with air con, but not over here.

Ort m8 hows u! im about to start the power stearing conversion on my mk4 van, it can be done but its not easy! ive spoke to a few that have done it an the easyest is to use mk5 parts and other early ford which used the old belt driven system, all i no so far is that i needed to get hold of a mk5 stearing rack and a few parts on the actual van need cutting and welding to make this fit! im doing sum more research now! once the rack is fitted and i have sum more details on wat parts im going to use ill post with pics!!!

I tried the mk5 rack myself too as one of the options before chooseing another route. It fits quite nicely and easily, and the rod ends can be rethreaded to accept the mk4 rod ends, etc.. IF you first remove the steering rack mounting panel altogether. It's just a few spot welds, but it's not for everyone. A new support can by the way be made out of a Sierra crossmember (using angle grinder). It has even the same bolt spacing for the steering rack monting.

Why not chop the column up and fit the vauxhall inline leccy stuff?
No need for pumps and all that gash. Just a Corsa, a grinder, a welder and some clever engineering.
I find my mk4 heavy and thats only got 185s on it - you're a mean bugger making your misses drive with 205s.

As for being a mean bugger i'm sure she wouldn't agree as I don't live with her and she is using the car as her every day transport instead of what can only be described as the worst mondeo ever built (a council door blue 1.6 with manual everything and less power than my strimmer) lol

hear is my neighbours car its a mk3 escort with a power steering conversion the alternator has been moved up and the power steering pump takes its place. and the whole conversion works with out fault. there is a pic of the sticker in the back window of the company who built and fitted the kit (ps the misses spell checked this
Very interesting to see but im finding it hard to make a lot out from the pictures (sorry)
I take it your neighbour is an old boy then seeing as that car has Automatic Transmission?

Is that an original motorbility car then? It looks like a later retro fit to me - the window sticker is wrong for a start because the phone number wouldn't have had an 01 code in the 1980s when the car was new.
ive got a mk4 escort and has been converted to power steering by the same company, its quite an old sticker as it hasnt got 01 infront of the number, its exactly the same system as pictured above

How do mate, are you keeping the car complete or would you be interested in selling the kit to me at all?
