Default bucket seats question

i read on an american car forum that if you have got bucket seats (the type with the fixed backs) that you should also have a roll cage or a roll bar at the very least.

is this true? i have read some crap and porkies on USA forums so am sceptical about what info some of them post.

i've got fixed-back buckets in mine, using the standard 3-point seatbelts. i have no roll cage (yet) but the car has passed the MOT with these seats fitted.

Try reading UK forums !!

What is the context it was written in ?

For example if you are building a car to conform to regulations of a race series and that series says you need bucket seats and a cage then yes you cant have one without the other.

it was something like "i've seen so many accidents where people have had fixed-back-upright seats and got massive head and neck injuries, because they should have a cage with those type of seats"

he wasnt talking in the context of track use, just the general principle of bucket seats in a car.

i didnt know if this was just someone spouting off with false made-up info, there is plenty of it goes on the forums over there

there is loads of cars i see at shows, in mags etc here in the Uk that have bucket seats but no roll cage so its probably just BS.

Does your insurance say you need it ? NO !!

Does your MOT say you need it ? NO !!

If the idea of having race seats turns you into an overnight racing driver then when you do have an accident, the chances of it being a bigger one are increased.

A cage alone wont save a head or neck injury, it is designed to save the car from causing you further injury.

So caged or not if you have a big enough accident you will get hurt.
