i'm cleaning mine out at the moment. some of them seem okay, where the plunger in the middle goes in and out easily against a spring and will squirt degreaser out.

the others though, the plunger didn't want to move. i put the tappet in a vice (with jaw protectors), with a short piece of ally tube on the punger and tightened it slowly. that seemed to unblock it and release it, and now they plunge in and out nicely too. will probably refit them over the weekend and let you know how it goes.

how are people taking them apart?

Have your plungers got springs in then Nick, so they return to the extended position on their own?
Mine have no spring (the manual x-section pictures show small springs), and I was curious to know if others have??

Hold the lifter in a vice and pull the plunger out with some big pliers is how I did mine
Deffo need stripping right down, waste of time/effort just pumping them in/out in degreaser, there is loads of little bits of shit in them
When you pop the plunger out there is a smaller piston/plunger inside the bigger one you've just pulled out of lifter.
This smaller one sits on top of a small spring and also has a ball bearing type valve/non-return valve in the end
Hope this helps.

CosKev3, will give that a go Kev. i've got a couple of spares to play with if it all goes horribly wrong.

richm, yes, the plungers seem to have a spring behind them and extend out on their own.
