Default Paint or Powdercoat????

Small Dilema here....What would you peeps think the best finish would be for the running gear on my three door Cos, rear beam, swing arms etc etc. Its all in peices & shot blasted ready for whatever finish i decide on. Would it be better to paint (ie Hammerite or acrylic 2 pack) or powdercoat. Opinions & or advice needed.
Cheers
Andy

powder coat - you can gets heaps of colours as well. Make sure when they sand blast your parts, you take it to a place where they specialise in auto parts! or else...

Blackeya,

Sorry to put a damper on things, powder coating is classed as a decorative finish and doesn't stand up to well to salt and continual exposure to the weather, you'll need to maintain the finish by keeping it clean. If you hadn't been wanting a satin black finish a solution would have been to ask the powder coater to apply a coat of clear powder. This however normally gives a deep gloss finish unless of course he has a satin powder. If you look at alloys some are wet painted, some are powdered. The powder finish always has clear powder applied to protect the silver powder, which is made from polyester.

Can i then assume that powder coating is not only a single coat process? Is the clear powder any harder than the black powder??? Need to know tonight really then i can get on to them in the am before they do anything.
Cheers

Yes powder coating is usually a one coat process apart from when clear powder is used. The clear coat isnt any harder but 2 coats are better than one.
You could ask the powder coater to double coat ,the second coat is applied when the part has just left the oven and is still very hot the part is then restoved Doing it this way avoids paint defects such as static marks.
PS I worked for many years as a powder coater .

Hi Jim,
Thanks ever so much for your helpful info. I contacted the chap who is doing the work & my parts are now going to be double coated. the second coat being a clear coat.

Glad to help . Over the years I powdered many items that I knew wouldnt withstand the weather if the customer never asked I never told him .
You wont regret getting the clear coat done it gives a far better and durable finish.

OE swing arm sphericals & poly all the rest. Just gotta find some new Sphericals though. Bit too expensive from the dealers.
