Default new turbo boost problems

hi there i have just fitted a new turbotechnics standard turbo to my escort and the boost did not kick in it was like it was just going throught the wastgate. so i adjusted the atuator by screwing it in till i had about 4mm pre load and gave it a spin and it works but i only get 0.2 bar i have a bleed valve fitted and that has not made any differance you can here the turbo spooling up tilll it get s to 0.2 bar then the wastegate opens. i have got a 31 atuator which was on the old turbo which was running 10-15 fine do you think i aught to put a bigger atuator on it i only want to run about 10 psi, its on an 1.8 zvh engine. the other thing is it has a uprated cam in and the top end it a bit noisey sound like a diesel but when you rev it it is much quiter. so i have tried to do the timing i dont know what the timing is for a zvh but i put the crank putty TDC and adjusted the cam to about 10 or 12 on the adjustable pully have got a timimg light but i dont really know what i am doing as far as adjusting the engine as i can adjust the top pully and the dizzy any help would be good thanks rob.

Default NEW TURBO BOOST PROBLEM

Hi, Sounds like you have a air leak, check all connections from the turbo to the intercooler and from there to the inlet side of the engine (to include throttle body)
Maybe when you fitted the new turbo you have not connected the pipe work correctly, you say the actuator you have was working ok before, -31 is approx 8 psi, when you pull on it does it it feel like its ok, not to soft, if the turbo linkcage is closed as it should be when you connect the actuator to it, and you have some pre-load wound into it, you should have some boost, more than 0.2bar =2.9psi. i take it the airfilter is not clogged, you have no air leaks as mentioned above and you have no exhaust restrictions, maybe the penny washer @ the wastegate is worn not seating properly all this assuming the new turbo has been tested and is good. what was the problem with the old turbo. regarding the boost, take out the bleed valve i take it by what you say its not the factory valve, with the valve taken out connect the compressor pipe staight to the actuator & check to see what the max boost pressure is,
Regards Dave R.

Default thanks for the info

thanks for the reply i will try it tommorrow i dont think there is any exhaust restriction as i have a 3 inch ss pipe but the old turbo used to boost fine up to 15psi but it smoked the street out will try taking air filter off and conecting turbo to actuator direct there isnt a chance that the inlet pipe from the injection system is closing up they have power eng pipes on . the actuator on the new turbo was already set to standard but it had no pre load to get 3-4mm pre load i had to screw the rod in all the way. anyway will try the things you listed tommorrow rob

Hi,

Just noticed your origonal message has been edited, zvh what engine management are you using, if the std escort RSTurbo mfi type, which it sound like, check that the inlet hose from the metering unit ( the inlet hose to the turbo ) although you said that the hose if i understand you correctly is a uprated power engineering hose, check it is not soft as this hose is common on RS Turbo's for collapsing and restricting boost. not 100% sure what the timing is on the zvh (ignition ) std rs is 12,d btdc. here is a pic of the std cvh valve timing. i wouldent play with the cam pulley as you may cause more problems, regards Dave R.

hi dave thanks for the info today i have taken the bleed valve off of the car and taken the air filter off to see if there was a air flow problem i went for a drive and the boost goes to 0.2 bar with no bleed valve and the pipes conected stright to the turbo and the actuator i looked at the actuator and it is a standard one it looks like it is an old actuator just been painted and you can pull the arm out really easy, so i got the other actuator i have which is a uprated thing that is anodised blue and i can hardly pull it out it is really hard so it maybe a faulghty actator my dad has run turbo technice to see what they say about it. the inlet pipe is quite soft it is pritty old and quiet oily and slimey i supose that isnt helping matters. the timing issues are that i bult this engine with the help of a friend with all the zvh conversion bits but when i put the timing belt on i notice that the belt would not fit on unless one of the pullys was turned either clock wise or anti clockwise so i set both top and bottom pullys TDC adjusted the cam pully so the belt would fit but i have a timing light will look at the timing tommorrow in the day light. how do you set the ignition timing to 12 d BDC does that involve moving the dizzy and with the timing light setting it a 12 im not to sur how to do this and way thanks for the help rob
