Default Will a S2 gearbox fit a S1

I have just bought a S1 but the gearbox is shot, I have lost 5th and the synchro has gone on 3rd and 4th. The lad I bought it off says its the linkage out of adjustment but I doubt it.

I see a few S2 gearbox's for sale, will they fit a S1? I have been told that it needs to be a Turbo one as an orion/escort one won't last too long.

Anyone who can help with this query?

Cheers Nick

Thanks very much for your reply, I keep getting people saying they are inter-changeable but I thought I'd ask the experts.

I will have to look out for an S1 gearbox now.

Cheers Nick

You can put a S1 box into a S2 but not the other way. It's only the center casing thats different you could take the center casing off your old s1 box and put it on to the S2 box if needs be its not to hard.

My advice:
Get any working 80-85 Escort/Orion 5-speed gearbox. All are the same strength anyhow.
Have a look inside it to see if something needs changing. At least change the diff bearings and oil.
Upgrade the mainshaft roller bearing if you wish.
Take the LSD unit from your old gearbox and reassemble.

Fit a S2 LSD to an IB5 and you pretty much have yourself a £600 CTS stage 1 box
