Default Can you check for bent valves with head in place? She runs!!

over reved series 2 last night wrong gear dropped to around 2 cylinders i think and limped it home was only round the corner!

Just took rocker cover off to see any tell tale signs, i found a very thin coil spring no wider then a few mm this was floating in the head!. One of the hydrolic lifters looks a bit suss in shape

i presume i have bent a valve or 2 but is there anyway to check before i take it all apart. I do have access to a compressor can i blow presure in via the plug hole to see if its sealing perhaps ?

if not i will re asemble and borrow a compression tester see the score ?

cheers

Default valves

if you limped home mate you definitely havnt done all 8 valves as the car would of stopped dead and not run at all. maybe youve got a shit comp tester ? try another comp tester you must have compression on some of them ? if memory serves me right cvhs have got rocker arms from hyd tappet over to valve check if any of these have broken. i know the old bm e30s are prone for breaking the rocker arms.

Default valves

forgot to say it you wana check for compression take one plug out and turn it over and it will chuff if its got compression. do this one by one so only one plug is removed each time and you should hear if theyve got compression.

i have all plugs out at the min and there is deffo no chuff. The compression tester only starts at 4 bar i think it was so maybe i am seeing less than this but not zero ? car only just got home it didn;t drie very well at all lol

For what it takes 2 take the head of u might as well just whip the head off n have a look. I just hope u havent done anymore damage like cracked the valve guides or damaged the pistons.

can you actually check the pistons and head whilst like this? to see if the leak or is it a pressure test job

I can't work this out.

Theres no way you caused that level of damage to valves by removing a head, they are mashed up to fuck.

Yet you say theres not a mark on that piston?

me either mate deffo was only just running, compression test revealed 0 compression yet their doesnt look to be any damage

i think i will drop the head off for a pressure check anyway see what they make of it. Nothing else can cause 0 compression can it ?

can damaged lifters cause compression problems maybe they took the impact :S

turn the head upside down and make sure all the valves are closed

pour thinners or petrol if you have no thinners into the four holes and leave it for a while, wen you come back if the petrol has dissapeared you have a valve problem

ie they are leaking

bit of grinding paste should solve this and re seat them

pretty sure at least one is bent. Just turned th ehead to see if valve at least looked like they were sealing. 1 is deffo a good 1mm out from sealing, so ovb fault there. Not sure about the rest, better to get this check by the engine shop as head will need pressure testing anyway befroe it goes back on?

its a big valve head but i cant find any paper work from when i had the head done to check valves sizes here is a few more pics

The suspect valve on 1 looks to have dumped oil ? petrol ? back up the inlet, the other 3 look fine

engine shop just rang

7 bent valves, 1 exhaust thread needs recoiling and a crack in chamber 2 between both valves he said it isn't leaking but may do in the future so go ahead with that too least i did it proper

Ł298 + vat for all the work plus 7 big valves whoops on a plus side, my mates compression tester clearly works fine

so u having it repaired even with the hairline crack?? it may not be leaking now while the head is cold but with how hot a cvh engine runs at it may well expand..

but thats your call...

Personally mate i'd start again with another head, for the price of a CVH head, you could probably have the new head made to the same spec as the current for the same sort of price.
