Escort Cos gauges

Hello, both temp and fuel gauges go into the red when ignition is on. I was told it is possibly the voltage regulator for the instrument cluster. Where would I start to look for this?

if you pull the instrument pack out and take the cover off the back, there is a little black box which will need de-soldering and replaced.

No black box

Sorry, I can't find a black box apart from the inverter for the instrument lights. Any other sugestions on where to look?
