I looked to buy a 4x4 cossie yesterday j plate 1991.Anyway the car hasn't been started for a week or so,the battery had been disconnected. The car started with no problem, nice an quiet, after a minute or so the tappets started getting a little noisy again for a minute or2,then it cleared and the car was nice and quiet again.Does this mean the tappets are passed their best and need replacing? What sort of cost would this occur and can you recommend a good quality tappets set to replace them with please. Will this happen every time you start the car from cold or is it possibly because the car has been standing and not started for a week or so?Please help.

Mine does the same i think its just a general cossie thing. If u buy it try doing an oil change cause this cud help. I used 2 use castrol oil in my cossie then i changed 2 an oil called silkolene n it taps a bit but not as bad as it did.

Ok then. Thanks for your advise. So you wouldn't change the tappets then?If I buy it I will try an oil change first. What spec oil do you use 5w 40 fully synthetic silkolene pro s?
if you running proper oil (which you should be) changing the oil wont help as it be very light, go to pj motorsport ask them for full set (16) of ina tappets, i put these in mine last week and they are spot on and only 70 pound, the reason your tappets are noisey is becasue some or all maybe are not holding oil pressure. i use castrol edge 10w60 oil
As said INA are oe kit makers of tappets.
Castrol oil is crap, you want SILKOLENE PRO S 10W/50, recent tests showed that the worst performing oil for retaining it's synthetic qualities was CASTROL head and shoulders worse than any other, then SHELL HELIX, Mobil 1 did better, but only just.
I have used tappet lube from WYNNS in the past to excellent effect, as well as engine flush, and the head that came off mine recently had not one single spec of carbon anywhere, nothing at all, despite 16 worn valve guides and 8 knackered valves(exhausts).
It is not unusuall for the tappets to tap for a few seconds when cold, so long as it goes when hot that is the main thing, but as said they still do not last forever.
Just be sure you get ones intended for the cossie and not VW ones which are dimensionally identical, but operate on a different pressure, and never seem to be as quiet.

Ina are the makers of the tappets u say.Where will I get these.I know woodford garage r advertising ford ones at about £160.How will I know what 2 ask for with reguards 2 them running on different pressures.
So silkolene 10w 50 is the one for the cossie then?I know originally when the cars were newish Ford spec. Formula S was a 5w40 oil.

You don't need to ask questions, Woodford are correct ones and good people you can trust.
I use MATT LEWIS 01922 692424, ace service, and around the 75 pound mark same ones genuine INA which are GERMAN.
You do not need to worry about suitability as Matt only sells the correct ones.
I use SILKOLENE PRO S, as do others and it is a fantastic oil, pricey but you get what you pay for!!
