Default Escort GTI - Engine people needed!!!

Hi, hopefully someone can help me out with this one!
My GTI keeps getting the stutters! when driving along i randomly get this ticking noise, then the car starts jerking around and then can cut out on its own, or will cut out when i put clutch in... Normally if i keep my foot to the floor it goes away.....

As amusing as my cars attempt at a Paula Radcliffe impression is, it would be much appreciated if i could get all the way home!

Today my mechanic bloke changed the fuel pressure regulator from a bodged job to a new one, and took off the pipercross induction kit (they are shite!) and put the standard airbox back on with K&N panel..

Any clues at to what this could be would be great!

lol had the car about 3 months done around 3K miles havent changed it, but levels are ok? this problem hasnt been there since i bought it, only for the last month, was cos someone fitted an FSE valve to it, AA fiddled with it and sorted that out and it was fine 4 a while, then it came back

im with oil fse wouldnt give a noise it would just die like you run out of petrol if it was to low and if it was to much you would get black smoke every where and a blown engine

who knows whats up with the feckin thing, ripped out my FSE valve now theres a standard regulator on there, but same problem! no smoke no nothing, just ticking, then it stutturs and if you stop with clutch in it will cut out, if you keep driving with foot down it sorts itself out and goes away for a bit....
