Default Focus Gearbox

I need to change the gearbox on my dad's focus, but I've been told there's 2 types it could be, an IB5 or MTX, is there anyway to tell what one it would be without my dad having to look under the car? Does it matter what box is used anyway?

The MTX alwasy has a reverse lock (you need to lift the thing on the lever) on the gearstick and the reserve is also locatded far left in the pattern if I remeber. IB5 has the reverse below 5th and has no lock for it or then you just press the entire stick down. MTX was fitted to diesel, RS and 2.0 variants and the IB5 to 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 variants.

Thanks both, looks to be an IB5 box as reverse is under the 5th gear and has no lock. Now for the hard part, finding one and fitting it lol.
Cheers again both

IB5 boxes are common as muck, and very easy to fit

Oh right, but I know that the MTX is also fitted to some of the 1.8 so I'm not in any better position than I was before, Lol

jesus christ man

Have you even bothered to look at the link i posted above?

And the MTX boxes uses a sliding collet on the gearstick to select reverse, as unlike the IB5 box they don't have an internal gate.

But saying that looking at the pictures on the site you mentioned SafeChav, they look very different so I should be able to tell the difference. I will have to have a look at the gearbox next time I'm in Birmingham visiting my dad. cheers once again
