By the alan key screw, do you mean the one inside the threaded bar, down the center of the strut?

If so, no. Hold that with a ratchet and crack off the nut on the threaded part, wind that down the thread and remove the cup at the top of the spring and anything else with it.

By the way, if you don't have a spring compressor at this point, youre fucked.

Its always fun undoing that nut and watching the spring fly off

never tried refitting it without a spring compressor though

How many coils do you have the spring compressor on?

Put it on as many as possible.

they only reach over 3 springs.....id have been ok if i had a couple of pairs of compressors....could have clamped them down as far as possible and then used second set to take them down....anyway.....found a gargage that put the new springs on with a hydrolic compressor £30 for the pair so im happy....still saved a fortune. only 1 side left to do then its ready for its re-mot on saturday.

cheers for you replies.
