Default Dash Clocks

Hi

I have a R plate escort encore estate, and on the dash have the speedo, engine temp, fuel level and a picture of a car.

Does anybody know what this car in the dash should do? It has the handbrake light underneath, but that is the only thing on it which works??

Secondly, if i bought a dial which showed the engine revvs, would the required mechanics be behind this car so it could be replaced??

Thanks people

The car is just a hole filler being as its a lower spec model, just has the warning lights on it.

You would more than likely have to run a wire to the coil pack so the rev counter can get a signal.

i had a astra mk3 1.4.it had a clock where the rev counter was.
i got a hold of some astra clocks witha rev counter. when i took the old ones out i simply just plugged the new ones in using the same plug, no modifacations.
and everything worked. might be the same on your car mate

Vauxhalls aren't Fords.............

It won't have the rev counter wire - thats almost guaranteed, and i'd be surprised if the wiring configuration on the clocks is the same aswell cos they rarely are.

My other half's 96' Fiesta Flight had a picture of the car. I bought a set of clocks and expected to have to run an extra wire to the coil but it already had it. The clocks plugged straight in and the revcounter just worked.

This is the first time I have ever had this with a Ford - I've always had to run an extra wire in older cars. It could be because 90% now come with a revcounter that they no longer bother having two different looms.

Point is - you might be lucky and they plug straight in

That's because you've fitted an ordinary revcounter to a car with a wasted spark coil pack (or is it the other way around )

Thanks for the replies.

I have just looked at what i would need to do to get to the clocks and it would involve removing the steering wheel and taking the whole of the dash out, and I don't fancy doing this if there is no cable behind.

So, I was wondering is there anyway of checking if I have the wire without the need to take apart the front of my car??

You shouldn't have to remove the dash, but steering wheel yes!

The only way to know for sure is to get the clocks out and see if the wire is there

Or find a car the same as urs down the scrappy and rip that apart........

That's right you can definately do it without removing the wheel.

I was reading the Haynes manual which is the reason I thought you had to remove the steering wheel. It was also on about messing around with the airbag, which isnt something i want to cock up!!

So just loosening the steering wheel will work then?

No you don't have to touch it at all. The clocks can slide out from behind it

Tis a bit of a tight squeeze without the wheel off though and you're almost guaranteed to scratch something.

Depends whether thats the kind of thing that bothers you i guess..........

If you've got the adjustable steering column it's a lot easier - pull it out as far as it will go.

If you haven't got a revcounter I would guess you don't have an adjustable column either tho...
