It's often referred to as a turbo compound setup, altough that term is used for many different setups including two turbine stages.
In short:
Exhaust gases drive the turbine of the smaller turbo. After that the exhaust gases drive the turbine of the larger turbo. The smaller one need to have a large wastegate.
The cold air intake goes first to the compressor of the larger turbo and then through the compressor of the smaller turbo. The to the engine via an intercooler.

Now, at low revs, the engine practically works as it only had the small turbo. When the revs rise, the wastegate of the small turbo will be wide open, and the larger turbo is spinned up. The boost is now built by the two compressor stages makin gthe system go further up and also more efficiently.

I see, i thought that was just the bi-turbo's on the likes of audis that one kicks i early.

Im thinking in general, as i dont understand the whole twin set up really.

So can any single turbo car be set up to run twin turbo then?

i know turbo technics used to do the twin turbo conv.

Again, ne info much appreciated

I think the turbo technics conversion you are thinking of is totally different. As I recall it was fitted to v6/v8s and you had two identical turbos - one on each bank.

They weren't interconnected in the way described above...

Ah i see, i thought that a twin turbo set up was two identical spec turbo's to begin with and that a bi-turbo set-up was the one kicking in on low revs etc..

How was the turbo tech system modified to fit?
