Default COILOVER QUESTION

i have just bought a escort cosworth and it has coilovers fitted (AVO's) When driving down the road it just bounces, even on a straight flat bit of road are they set up to soft or to hard? & whats the best way to check them.

Set them to fully soft, turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE, they are bloody boucy anyway very hard, check it has not been set silly low as the springs will be compressed and not have free length which will make it even worse.
I use mine at fully soft, and it's still hard and bouncy.

I found that the softness on mine mad eno differnece because of the height it was set at. the higher up and the softer you have it the more comfy it will be.

or you could do what i di and just egt sue to it, passengers don't like it so much :/

You can always change the springs if too hard.

Think of whats happening...

A damper is used to dampen the effect of a springs oscilations

Your damper is either not working enough to dampen the springs, this could be due to ride height or stiffness.

If its hopping down the road the spring is not being allowed to oscilate enough and is therefore over damped.

make sure you are not confusing harshness with bounce as they do tend to be bloody hard, YOU WILL FEEL EVERY SMALL IMPERFECTION IN ROAD.
The dampers normal thing is to leak after a time especially if people have not used the adjusters for a long time then do as the seals dry out this is what happened to mine.
you can always speak to NIGEL, CHASSIS DYNAMICS on 01604 708101.
CHASSIS DYNAMICS & AVO are one and the same.
The front adjuster adjust rebound only whereas the rears adjust the bump and rebound.
The front spring rate is 300lb"(9") and the rear 200lb"(12") on a 2WD SIERRA COSWORTH, just to give you an idea the std front sierra cos is 190lb" from ford, so you can see these were never going to be a comfy set up.
A lot of people set them way to low and this compresses the spring adding PRE LOAD which stiffens the rate further, instead of using a shorter spring, I have mine set at std ride height -1" that's all.
It might be a good bet to speak to NIGEL as he is a very knowledgeable man, and happy to talk cars all day.

Go for an oil filled and gas pressurised damper if you want it to work well. Then you could take things a stage further and look what gas / oil combo is being used.

I'd guess both companys make different items some cheap some not so cheap. You do only get what you pay for yes

Can't complain about mine, track it as well, mine is very comfortable FOR ME.
Not to everyones taste suspension is a very personal thing.
Have used BILSTEIN, SPAX, KONI, AVO.
MY thoughts,
BILSTEIN UTTER CRAP, AND BELONG IN BIN.
SPAX VERY GOOD BUT A TAD HARD
KONI BEST ALL ROUND FOR ROAD
AVO MY FAVS
