Major Problem With RS1800
Hey Guys,
Right got a bit of a problem with the missus's Rs1800 - Recently its been driving like a proper dog! (mainly when cold or wet first thing in morning, but has done it on dry days) The problem gets better when car is warmed up but its still there but only minimal. Not sure whether its miss-firing or something else but driving along and all of a sudden it will judder so hard i nearly loose my front teeth on the steering wheel.
After it judders a few times i try to plant the throttle to see if i can push through and it will pull like a train for about 4 secs then the car will judder and lose all power.its coughs and splutters out the exhaust like nobodys business. It has even died on me twice going down a hill.
Its been at a garage now for a little over 4 weeks!!! ( and they are supposed to be a very very good garage) they have no idea what the problem is - their complelty stumped, they take it out with laptops all plugged in and it shows no faults what so ever, and its not as if its intermittant fault - its there all the time. they have replaced plugs, leads, maf sensor everything but still no difference.
If anyone on here can shed any kind of light of what i can check or what they think it could be then please please dont hesitate. Because if i cant fix it, i will have to sell up and loose alot of money!!
The garage have come back to me today saying they really believe that the problem is the ecu ( even though i havnt touched it the whole time my missus has owned the vehicle)
they can get a loan ecu for £50 - it it fixes the problem then i just pay the price of the ecu, if it doesnt fix the problem i have to pay the £50.
Could it be the ecu?
Do you guys think this sounds a con? should i try and source an ecu myself??? even if i can borrow one just to see i it fixes the problem?
Things that have been checked:
TPS,
CPS,
Lambda sensor (altho its a non ford one)
Plugs,
Leads,
Maf,
Cheers,
Ade

very good garage!!! -4 weeks!!!! they aint got a clue have they??? as mentioned try gearbox sensor-£50 for an ecu and you the £50 pay if its not that he's having a laugh-how much is the bill as it stand at the moment?????-bring it to me i can charge you the same for same work!!!,are you machanically minded? -get it home do it yourself and get the feelgood factor its only time.
Speed sensor? where is that???
The garage is supposed to be one of the best ones in my area - they have even had a Ford technician down looking at it and he cant source the problem.
Well i work for Land Rover and they have cars in that we are better fixing so they are kinda doing it as a favour - not paying for any diagnosis. only have to pay for the part that fixes the problem. but its starting to get so annoying because its such a blatant fault and its there all the time.
It really feels like its getting starved of fuel but nothing on the computer system is coming up as faulty.

Well...........the way i see it, good reputation or not, 4 weeks to fix an electrical fault............they aint that good
Wheres the sensor?? Heres a lil hint
lol.
If you look down from the top and follow the speedo cable its inline with that on the gearbox speedo drive.
i bet you its the speed sensor!
And if it is, and that garage is good, how good does that make me?

I cannot see the VSS causing the kind of problems you are seeing, on the RS1800 it's mainly used for idle control, it should not cause the kind of cutting out you are experiencing at speed. Considering what you've already swapped, I'd look at the coils or fuel pump.

they do a emisions test at any mot station for cataliyst some times it will show up a fault. but the easyiest way is to take it off and see if it has collapsed if not try and run it up with out it and see if it still has the same problem. but i bet it is the cat that is at fault, or check the intake hose between the air mass meter and the intake as these tend to split causeing rough running and missing and the problems you describe
