Default Anti lag questions

I am considering fitting antilag to my 2wd saff, however i have no idea what is involved.

Just a few questions for any experts out there
How does it work
How much will it cost
What are the dangers
Is it a DIY fit option or who will fit this for me

Any help would be greatly appreciated

99% sure this would not be a DIY option.

I would imagine cost will depend on your current setup.

Give Stu from MSD a phone if your not to far from sunny blackpool

How does it work

It chucks in more fuel to spool the turbo quicker iirc

How much will it cost

Dependant on spec, need a turbo with ALS and also the ECu has to be able to control ALS

What are the dangers

Shortened Turbo and engine life.

Is it a DIY fit option or who will fit this for me

Yes can be DIY, theres a guy putting an antilag T3 into his FWD ax !
But you still need to take it somewhere to get it mapped up correctly

get a p8 ecu, send it to someone who can modify it msd/oddkidd.
Get a hold of an als valve and bore out the idle holes on your throtle housing.

Then you are set to go. (it wont last long though, but depends on your use.)

anti lag is only ingition retard about/more than 40 deg after TDC

if you have programable ECU you can try retard ignition and add some fuel at engine breaking (very low manifold pressure and high rpm)

if not you must buy standalone ECU most of them have ALS function, it can also be done by some piggyback's (i'm trying to do this by SMT6 - www.perfectpower.com )

Default anti lag

anti lag works something like this. It has mild to wild depending what u use it for and who sets it up, Its defo not a diy job unless U have the proper equiptment. It works by retarding the ignition timeing to fire on the exhaust stroke so the explosion spins up the turbo and keeps it going off throttle, foot down and timeing back to normal in a split second and full power it there if wild antilag is used it will eat a turbo or two u will need

turbo with internal mods
p8 ecu
Idle speed valve modified
pipe work for the above valve
eprom maped to run it all

give a few cosworth specialists a phone and ask them there advice

Anti-lag, is a system used on cars to completely eliminate turbo lag. It is a feature of the engine management system. WRC cars are fitted with a class mandated restrictor on the turbocharger inlet and this increases turbo lag significantly. Because of the pressure drop across the restriction, the pressure ratio for a given boost level is much higher and the turbocharger must spin a lot faster to produce the same boost as before.

Anti-lag effectively increases the mass of exhaust fed to the turbocharger. This is typically done by retarding spark timing to a point where most of the combustion happens in the exhaust manifold, typically around 40° ATDC. At the same time more air must be added, this can either be done by the use of a throttle bypass valve or a throttle stop solenoid. When anti-lag is switched on it is typically active when the throttle is closed, and when the throttle is opened the spark timing is resumed to normal.

Exhaust temperatures produced by this system are phenomenal but they can be controlled by varying the amount of fuel injected while anti lag is active; a richer mixture lowers the temperature. Anti-lag is typically only used on race cars because it can shorten the turbocharger service life down to impractical periods for street use. The turbine blade life is drastically reduced, and the entire exhaust system is put into shock, which can lead to explosion or fire

Information above borrowed from oddkiddcreations

Ive just got a P8 ECU with pectel board modified to run ALS, Air Injectors, Water Injection and Dizzyless with the ability to use a Pectel monitor

This will be fitted to my Escort in the new year with the full cossie management, im currently waiting for a maram shaft turbo to turn up which offers additional strength but is exceptionally costly.
Apparently anything but very very mild antilag can serious effect turbocharger life and as such you require the stronger maram shaft.

One thing that people often forget to point out that using ALS on the public highway may be against the law as it can be considered noise polution so you could find yourself in trouble if used on the roads.

I personally do not consider ALS to be cheap if you are going to do it well and invest in a maram shafted turbo.

Talk to Jano Oddkidd about it, hes the fella doing mine

You can also get a Nitrous ALS, basicly uses Nitroes until the lag is gone then cuts out. Seems to be an option if your worried about turbo/engine life and wish to remove the turbo lag.
