Default excessive play ni steering wheel on s2???

Hi guys. Carfailed MOT today on excessive movement at steering wheel. Basically the steering wheel moves slighly around on the column. I thought they were all like this as it is hardly any at all but it failed none the less. What would this be down to? Any favourite/traditional bits to check etc.

Thanks guys

Items 4, 14, 7 & 8 are the column bushes, i think the lower column bushes (no's 7 & 8) are prone to wear. Ford call them bearings, but they are just two nylony plasticy bushes. Did some on my mk4 orion injection a few years back when it failed it's test.

I would'nt want to drive it like that mate them bushes are there for a reason but you could try that if the mot station aint that far from your house or can you not get to you local ford and see if they got any? if it's just the top one gone it cant be that hard to do

There should be a plastic sleeve im sure, if you take your wheel off and look at the casting im sure one edge of the hex has a notch which the sleeve locates into, and also operates the auto cancel!

Why don't you take a picture of what you have, that will probably be easier!

I have number 5. The spacer that goes behind the wheel?????

To be honest i didnt think they were needed anyway as I didnt have it fitted on my old s2. However it is fitted guys.

Its really annoying!! I would take a pic but taking it for welding in a min so wont have time. Will try when i get back. Basically i have the sleeve then the hex just sits inside. I have all the bearings and the spring at the bottom though if that helps.

Thanks guys
