Default Battery or Alternator

Hi,

I'm having problems with my FRST, yesterday i noticed that the battery light was but very dimm could hardly see it unless you were looking for it.

Anyway today the car died and i had ignition lights but very dimm and when the car was turned over nothing.

i had a jump start but as soon as the leads were taken off the car would stall.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

I had this with my fiesta turbo, went through 5 alternators in two years, try giving the battery a real good charge or buy a new one, although from my experience its more liley to require a new/recon alternator

The only reason for having a battery is to physically start the car - once running it would run forever and a day without a battery

Charge the battery, start the car and get your volt meter out. You should be getting about 13.8 volts with just the engine running, so thats the first sign, and if you turn the car off and the voltage rises from what you had just seen, its definately the alternator

AND if it is the alternator, dont spend £100 on a new one, get your brush pack replaced and save yourself probably a good £75

Thanks for the replies, this alternator is only about 8months old, anyhow

I put a meter onm the battery without the car started and got a reading of around 5volts, started the car and got a reading of around 11volts, but as soon as the jump leads were removed the car stalled.

Thinking it's the alternator

Thats never right! If you have jump leads connected it should be more or less the same as the car your jumping off.

Get the battery off and give it a charge and do what i said above mate.

surely!!! if you remove a battery from a petrol engine while its running it will die!! diesel is a different story as it fires on compression where a petrol engine needs a spark!! hence the car stalling when jump leads removed, that will never happen with a diesel (compression) you can drive all day and night (if you didnt use a source that req'd electrics) use a battery tester of the type that shorts out across the poles (any garage will do it for you) but it does sound altenator.guru7001/2
