Default Oil Sump Gasket

I have a 1997 2 litre Vtec mondeo and i have quite a bad oil leak coming from the sump. Is replacing the sump gasket a hefty job? I have been told that the engine has to come out in order to reach the sump box, is this correct or have i been fed a lie from a greedy garage owner? please help!

I'm no expert and could be wrong (wouldn't be the 1st time! lol) but i wouldn't think the engine would have to come completely out, maybe loosened and wiggled and it may well be a bastard and a bit fiddly to do - some new cars are, particularly around the flywheel side...
