Default Ford escort 1998 rear drums

Hi, basically i'm getting a grinding noise when i brake and intermittently when just plodding along i'm pretty sure it's the rear brakes as i pulled the handbrake up slightly and the noise went away, does any1 have any ideas of wat it could be i have no knowledge of the rear brake assembly but would really just want an idea of the problem and a 'worst case scenario' of the costs i'm likely to pay to have sorted. thanks in advance.

The leading edges of the shoes have probably worn through and its grinding metal on metal.

You might be lucky and just need new shoes but i expect the drums are scored now aswell
