Default Zetec running problems

Hello there...

Got a Cabriolet Escort (XR3i) with the 1.8 Zetec engine,

Im having problems getting the engine to run smoothly, it starts straight away but dies immediately, I have found that if i unplug the throttle position sensor then i can coax it into idle, and it revs up fine if done carefully.

it has been stood a long time without use.

Can anyone advise me on what I can check, such as correct voltages etc...?
I know electronics and have test equipment, just not familiar with the cars test points and procedures.

Thanks in advance.
Mark.

Also, just found a Fault code reader i had tucked away, it says it does 1.8 Escorts.... with 3 Pin connector..
Will this be any use?
Cheers.

sounds like the idle speed control valve a well known fault on all zetecs

take of and clean with some petrol or replace

hope this helps

I fixed all my problems..
Turned out to be wires broken at the top of the heater, by the wiper arms..
Looks like a rodent has been chewing them....lol

I'd better check all my cables... when the idle got worse, it was coz one of the wires on the connector to me iscv had fallen off

but I'll check those wires tommorow, would be beauts if it's just that - causing my probs!
