Default Piston ring height and skimming pistons

A couple of questions

1) How far can you skim a piston, As in whats the safest distance between the top compression ring and the piston crown??

2) I dont know if what ive been told is true, Is there an advantage to bringing th top compression ring closer to the top on the piston??

Skimming would depend on the pistons themselves, to the best of my knowledge its the distance of the top ring being the depending factor on skimming, its the actual thickness of the crown.

As for the second bit i can't say hand on heart i know the answer, sounds like a bit of an urban myth IMO.

That just makes the job of calculating how much to skim off them a nightmare
