Default ignition problems and questions

Hey people!

I've run in to a serious hard to solve problem with my RST S2, and I'm therefor looking for some answers to a couple of questions, so PLEASE if anyone has any ideas, bring it on

Last week my fuelpump went bye bye, being sure that was the problem, and not the relay, I changed it for a new BOSCH pump, 20 min. later and the car was good to go. I took the car out of the garage, and later on all the way home, for about 40 km (i guess that's about 25 miles, maybe) without any problems, what so ever.
Next day off to work, I get in the car, and it won't start. - As the first thing I check the fuel pump relay, and sure enough, no clicking. So off to my Ford dealer to buy a new one, changed it with the old, but still no click?! I've now done the best testing I can, and as far as I know the relay is getting all signals, but still not working. I've checked all fuses, and replaced most of them, even though they looked fine. My alarm has been checked, and there is no starter blocking installed, so it's not that either. So i've pulled off one of the ignition cables and put a sparkplug in it to check if it get's spark, but NO, so no fuel, and no spark, what's up with that?! anyone?

Next; A mate of mine had an old ECU laying around, but no one knows if that's any good, but I've tried it anyway, and still no spark/fuel. Which leads me to yet another question; since my other mate has a RST S2 also from 1987 but he's ECU does NOT have the same color code as mine, so can I test my ECU in his car without problems, or what's the difference?

So if anyone can figure out what the problem with my car is, or answer me if I can test my ECU to check that, that is not the fault, please reply, since I now have no car to drive, and no ideas of what to check next?!

quick sum up; no spark, no fuel, new fuel pump, new fuel pump relay, lot's of juice on the battery, all fuses OK, no starter blocking, + signal on the ignition coil, new sparkplugs/wires/rotor etc. - anyone see a problem?!

Looking forward to get some ideas of what this could be... Thanks!

but how does that have anything to do with the fuel pump/relay? pretty strange if they both die at the same time, and I then get a new relay from Ford, and that does'nt work either, right?

I would also say its the disributor. They have "tachometric" relays, they operate from the low tension ignition signals. If the sensor in the dizzy breaks down then no low tension signals will be produced, hence no spark, or fuel. The fuel pump should however still prime when you turn the ignition on. If it doesnt prime then there is obviously another fault too.

As for the ignition ECU's they should all start your car, but some of the earlier ones don't support the knock sensor and second coolant sensor the later models have, i'd keep your ecu (incase u were going to change) but its ok to check it works, i wouldnt drive the car hard on them though, idling will be ok.

well.. safechav you where right, popped in another dizzy last night, and wroom, the car started right away

The fuel relay seems to be working fine now, but it doesn't prime as some people think it should, but the car takes on gas fine, and idles fine...

Thanks for your help, I think I'll post my troubles before I start disasembling the whole car, should it come to that again

thanks

Nice one!!!!!

Just 1 thing, the fuel pump should prime, its not essential but it always helps........probably more so in the very cold weather as it boosts the fuel pressure to ensure a positive start. Take the relay out and test for 12v on the BLACK wire when you turn the ignition key, if there is 12v then the relay is fucked, if there isn't ( ) you've got a wiring fault.

At least your running again though

hi again

I've checked the relay, and the wires, everything should be good to go, I've even tried with a brand new relay, and no prime, but the car runs perfect again - so I don't know what's up with the prime?!

But my god it's good to be able to out run those VW's again

Have you got 12v on the black wire when the ignition is on?

Unfortunately the ignition timing doesn't have anything to do with it
