Hi all
got a problem with my s2 the other day was stuck in traffic and i get a load of smoke out of the bonnet, opened it and the smoke was coming out from the fuse box. i have had the fan on direct, so i suspect this was the cause. i have replaced blown fuses and took the fan of direct, car runs but front heated screen and heaters dont work, and the alarms started playing up. i have checked and replaced all fuses. is there anything else i can check, do i need to replace the fuse box. pls help

The fuse box as iancseries2 said is just clipped in. You will see 4 clips, and all you need to do is just pull the sides of the fuse box gently and use the wiring grommet to just ease the fuse box past the clips then you can gently lift it up. However if your car hasnt been played about with much u won't be able to lift it very high, the wiring is cable-tied in place under the dash, when cut it gives you a fair bit of slack, you'll have a right nightmare if the cable tie is still on.
Check the relays towards the back of the fuse box they are common to burning out. If however you do need a new fusebox you will probably be better off buying a new loom, as the fuse box isn't easily seperated from the wiring.
Something they changed on the mk5's, everything just plugs up (just aswell though mk5 fuse boxes are absolutely crap!!!!)
Sounds to me though to be honest like the main positive busbar is breaking down.

hi thanks for all your replies
i had a look today and all the relays are ok (not burnt)
but the loom going into the fuse box is wat was burning
i have took a few pics

so what should i do and what sort of money is it going to cost me to get repaired, would the fusebox itself be ok or am i better of replacing both
the car does drive, would it be safe to drive it, whilst being repaired?
cheers

That doesn't look good.
Neither the heated screen or the fan blowers wiring are in that section of the loom either, i think its probably not going to be worth repairing. Theres a lot of fried wires there and if your going to do it properly its very time consuming chasing wires and cutting and joining sections in, and you may even go to all that trouble and not even cure the fault, and it will all go up again.
That in my opinion is not safe to drive around in, a fire waiting to happen amongst many other possible nightmares.
Keep your eye out on eBay looms creep up on there fairly regularly. Don't quote me on it but i think around £50 for a loom is about average. Obviously you would have to put your alarm over to the new loom, but thats going to be easier in my opinion.
