The cosworths run the Teves MKII ABS system, same as the Granada

The following are pictures I have taken from an Autodata book, detailing the ABS system on the Cossie, it shows everything except the "G" Meter (4WD) and fluid resevoir cap... I am still unsure if the 4WD Cossie has a pedal travel sensor too..

It hasnt helped me though it may help someone else ...

I have the Ford Service Training manual for Teves. I'll gladly scan it in if there is enough interest

It centres on operation rather than fault-finding, but it has helped me out in the past

just read the whole lot. Seems as though you are supposed to test it at the ECU plug rather than the sensors themselves. Is the sensor where the main ECU is in the car? Who does a Diagnostics tool for ECU's?

boXXer The sensors end signals to the ecu (in the ECOs its in the boot) so checking at ECU helps eliminate dodgy wiring

You can use a EEC breakout box, though Im unsure where you may get one, I just used an ohmeter unplugging the loom from ecu

it says that to chek th ersistance connect an ohmeter across the ecu plug

now its saying pin 28 and 46 for a sensor but the ecu plug only has 35 pins

sorry to sound thick but this helpful but totally lost me at the same time?

there are blank spaces on the ecu loom plug, if you look at the plug they are numbered, so even though there may only be 35 pins, they aren't all 1 through to 35... some are blank

yes i that is true

but were the hell is pin 46 as stated above if the pins or blanks only go from 1 to 35

i found it on mine...

there may only be 35 actual pins... but 50 or so slots for them

I have a fully automated test tool for this ABS system.
This is a gadget I designed 5 years ago for a well known
automotive tools company who sold lots of them to the trade.

It tests EVERYTHING except the abs ECU itself.
It allows testing of the wheel sensors, valves and pump.
Also, you can jack a wheel off the ground, get someone else to
rotate it by hand then press then brake pedal, the wheel will stop,
then you can push a button and the wheel will release, testing the valve
block and abs pump pressures by true operation.

This is all done by removing the ABS ecu, replacing it with the
test one and the unit has a display and keyboard so you can
perform one of 50 tests to check the system quickly.

If you get stuck, I can let you borrow it for a few days.
May even sell it now as I have an Escort Cos and it doesnt do that system.

excellent that confirms what i was saying about how to test the sensors a while back then

As Damo says testing at the ecu multiplug will yield the same results but uses the wiring from the sensor to the ecu instead of just checking directly at the sensor (but it good to check this part of the wiring also )

so should i test it at the sensor plug, and the ecu plug? What settings does the multimeter have to be on? and where are the sensor plugs on the 3dr?

Just ECU is easier IMO as you can maintain a constant speed easily and see how they compare ie 10mph 20 mph etc

Voltage (V) now I think its AC..??

Inner wings and under rear seat ??

Also you need to check for resistance/continuity IIRC

Ive just looked at the pics again... its all up there, page 133

Make sure you remove sensors and clean all the grooves on driveshafts etc then repack with cv grease

i had to test mine at the sensor only way i got a reading was when it was set to milli volts on the meter

and in the end i gave up as i couldnt work out which one needed a seensor
so changed the two fronts and was still the same

so just cleaned the earths up on the sensors and sanded the hub down to get rid of surface rust

put it all back together and job done abs working again and no probs since

i just checked my sensors one by one (disconnected them and checked the voltage)

As per Damos post

you are looking for around 0.2 volts at a wheel speed of 60 rpm.

I of course didnt know what the voltage was supposed to be however all i needed to know was that the sensor WAS giving a reading of some sort that varied with wheel speed (obviously increasing with wheel speed)

if i had know the pin outs i would have checked at the ECU end but it makes no odds really if just testing the sensor.

you want the Multimeter set to voltage and anything thats capable of reading around the range described in the pic above (0.2v)

My particular multimeter was set to 200mv - 2v but others may be different!

the sensors plugs below the rear bench on the 3dr (maybe others) and come through the chassis rail at the front IIRC.

i found one of mine wasnt earthing properly and just needed a clean up as well as the hub needing a quick going over with some sand paper when the sensor bolts in.

I did, much easier than fannying about trying to read a voltmeter with a quick spin of a wheel... just find an empty straight quiet road ... I used an Ind est on a sunday
